No Gender Factor In AU Race

For approximately a decade, the Athletic Union hasn’t had a female President.

Strangely, some think it has become impossible for a girl to run out a victor in an AU President election.

What a load of tosh.

We are lucky to have two very strong candidates to replace Lewis Timms this year. But whether Jennie Cooper or Tim Jenkins come out on top, it will have nothing to do with gender.

Girls have run for AU President in each of my three years at Loughborough. In each of those three years, stronger candidates and/or stronger campaigns beat them.

Cooper was always the favourite going into this year’s race. Despite Jenkins’ great qualities, it is no surprise that she holds a lead in our latest straw poll.

But please. If Jenkins does win, let’s not have any of this gender analysis.

It is utterly flawed.

Just rest assured that the best AU in the UK will be in safe hands either way.

Whether it is this year or not, when the right female comes along for AU President, she will win.

End of debate.
