Loughborough Lightning remain winless in the 2013 Super League after another heavy defeat this time to reigning Super League champions Manchester Thunder, 72-40.
Thunder got off to a flying start as goal shooter Krista Enziano scored 19 of her 23 attempts as the home side raced into a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lightning sought to stem the flow of points by making a number of changes during the second quarter. Jade Forbes Wattley came into the goal keeper position, while Fran Desmond came on as centre with captain Sophia Candappa moving to wing attack.
While these changes did slow Thunder’s scoring somewhat, they continued to dominate the game and had stretched their lead to 38-16 by the time the half-time whistle blew.
The third quarter saw Loughborough improve considerably with goal attack Vanessa Walker and goal shooter Nikita Piggott matching the scoring exploits of the Thunder during this period.
However, the Lightning could not maintain this form during the final period as Thunder rallied once again to pull further ahead and claim victory.
Lightning Head Coach Jo Webb spoke to Planet Netball after the match and said:
“We didn’t play our best today compared to our last two matches. We definitely have got the people and tactics to combat other teams, we just need to do it on the court”
In better news for the East Midlands franchise, Loughborough Lightning players Sophia Candappa, Fran Desmond, Jodie Gibson and Lauren Massey have been called up to the England Under 21 squad for the upcoming Netball Europe U21 Championships. The event will be held in Cardiff from April 26-28.
Gibson has also received a senior call up for England’s tour of Jamaica at the start of April.
